Captains Report

Captain’s report for the annual meeting of the DMVGA
at Dainton Park on Wednesday, October 5th, 2016.

After the first committee meeting of the year in January there are those useful few weeks to organise the fixtures and teams for the coming year. Most of this work is done by Bob and he keeps the Captain well informed. The teams for the Kent match were organised in early January as well as all the information for each of the club reps.

The first event of the year, the Presidents Salver at Tavistock, made up of 3 man teams, was won by Bovey Castle with 103 points and Stover 2nd with 103 points. The  day was fine, a good start to the season.

On Monday 9th May the DMVGA team of 11 pairs played Cornwall at The Point, a course that has changed over the year! A good friendly day and Cornwall won 6 ½ – 4 ½ . The return match the following week at Tavistock, where the score was 6 ½ to Devon and 4 ½ to Cornwall, resulting in  a draw, so Devon keep the Trophy!

The Spring Meeting at Saunton East course was an individual stableford,  played in very dry conditions on 8th June and this was the first DMVGA event to be registered with Golf England as a handicap qualifier and went off without a hitch, all scores registered. Phil Webb won the Bert Wills Scratch Trophy with 40 points. The spring meeting also had a competition for the over 75’s won by Nobby Wheatley of Libbaton.

At the end of June the annual Western Morning News match was held at Downs Crediton, a challenging course, in good weather conditions for the 55 three man teams. The Trophy winners were an Exminster team with 103 points, 2nd from Saunton and 3rd from Tiverton.

The annual match against Kent was held in Kent this year and was very well organised in good weather for the two days played. We all travelled to Kent in our own cars and stayed at the Weald of Kent golf course and hotel at Headcorn, just south of Maidstone. The Match was the following day at Bearstead golf club at 12.30 for the 8 pairs. This was followed by the Post Match Dinner and the presentation of the Salver to Kent who won 5 – 3. The DMVGA team enjoyed the match and the company of the Kent team and look forward to playing them again at Churston next year. We transferred back to the Weald Hotel, golf course and played another friendly Kent team of 8 pairs the following morning where Devon lost 7 – 1. We then travelled back to Devon that evening after the meal, a busy few days !

The Summer meeting at Dainton was also busy on Wed 20th July with 187 players from 24 Devon clubs in very good weather. This is an individual stableford competition and the winner of the Claret Cup was Trevor Eardley(22)  of Woodbury Park with 41 points. Again this was a handicap qualifier but some problems developed with the software and some clubs didn’t receive their information until later. The problem was eventually solved and now works well.

On 3rd August the DMVGA played the Devon Juniors, an annual match for 8 pairs in each team, organised by Mike Jewell of Devon Golf. Mike is a member of Tiverton golf club. Members are invited to play each year and the team is organised by Bob Small and the current Captain. This year the match was at Dainton Park on Wednesday 3rd Aug with the Juniors playing off the whites and the DMVGA off of the yellows!

This match is generally won by the Juniors whose handicaps this year, ranged from 3 to 9.  For a change the DMVGA team won 4 ½ to 3 ½ .  This is only the second time that the we have beaten the Juniors in 28 years.

The Millennium Trophy was held in lovely weather on the 18th August at Torquay  Golf Club for three man teams, each representing their own club with handicaps of 1-14, 15-20, 21-28.      It was won by Portmore with 108 points,  2nd Staddon Heights 101points,  Fingle Glen 99 points, Exminster 97 points and Wrangaton 95 points.

On Thursday 1st Sept The Autumn meeting was held at Honiton golf club in lovely weather on a very well run and organised course. Again another qualifier.

The winner of the Mike Kelly Cup was David Morgan of Honiton with 41 points.    The Haarer & Motts Trophy for the over 70’s was won by Stuart MacKerrell  of Dainton with 39 points

1—18 handicaps won by Phillip Webb, Ilfracombe with 37 points

19—28 handicaps won by Barry Pearce, Borringdon Park with 29 points

The Emerton Court final between Staddon Heights and Libbaton was held at Churston Golf club on Monday. It was a great game played in the best of spirits and with a good number of enthusiastic  spectators.         The match was won by Staddon Heights,3 – 2, on the last putt of the last green, a great day.

The annual match against the Ladies will take place at Woodbury next Monday. I hope all team members are still available as there have been many changes over the last few weeks.

My year as Captain has been busy as one would expect and I would like to thank all those club members and others,  who have helped me over this memorable  year, thank you all.

Stuart MacKerrell,

DMVGA Captain 2016
